Position Summary

Watchmaker is inviting applications for the full-time position of Research and Development Scientist based in Cape Town, South Africa. This position reports to a Principal Scientist, and will be responsible for the development of novel, proprietary products for a range of genomics applications. Responsibilities
  • Design, plan, perform and analyse molecular biology experiments including: biochemical characterisation and optimisation of enzymatic reactions; PCR and qPCR; next-generation sequencing; bioinformatic data analyses.
  • Play a central role in commercialising products within an international team.
  • Accurately document details of all experiments in an electronic lab notebook; meticulously analyse and interpret data; and regularly present results and project status updates to managers and peers for discussion.
  • Contribute to conceptualising and inventing innovative technologies for the genomics market.
Required Qualifications

The candidate should have a MSc or PhD in molecular biology, biochemistry or a related discipline. Experience in the following areas is highly desirable: nucleic acid chemistry and structure; enzymatic reactions and assay design; next-generation sequencing (NGS) and related bioinformatics; PCR, qPCR, and related technologies.

The following skills and experience are requirements for the position:

  • Solid wet-lab skills, and experience working with enzymes, DNA and RNA.
  • High accuracy and reliability in execution of experiments.
  • Ability to independently plan, execute, troubleshoot, and interpret ​​complex scientific and technical problems.
  • A profound interest in biotechnology, and a strong desire to develop commercially successful products.
  • Excellent organisational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • The ability to multitask, perform consistently under pressure and work without supervision.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work as an effective member of a team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent personal task management skills with a high level
Education and Experience
  • PhD or MSc in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or related fields.
