Watchmaker Genomics is inviting applications for the full-time position of Bioinformatics Associate I. This position reports to a Senior Bioinformatics Scientist, and will contribute primarily to on-going ad hoc R&D data analysis and visualization. This role will also entail contributing to robust internal analytical pipeline development and mathematical model development. Furthermore, this position will contribute to the development of automated analytical pipelines which requires rigorous, scalable software development and testing. The ideal candidate will also have a firm understanding of the basic molecular biology of sequencing library preparation.

Responsibilities
  • Contribute to a highly innovative and efficient R&D computational biology program
  • Implement novel algorithms for the analysis of a wide variety of sequencing data sets
  • Build, maintain and grow a well-engineered and documented code base
  • Identify opportunities for internal process improvement
Skills and Requirements

The candidate should have a B.Sc or M.Sc in bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science, mathematics/statistics, or physics. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in data exploration and visualization. Strong software engineering skills and a basic understanding of methods of sequencing library preparation are a plus. Experience in other areas including structural biology, data extraction from large biological databases (e.g. GEO, TCGA, JGI genome database, etc) are also plus.

The following skills and experience are requirements for the position:

  • Proficiency in Python and/or R, familiarity with statically typed languages such as C++ and Java are a plus

  • A basic understanding of molecular biology techniques such as PCR and sequencing library preparation

  • Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work as an effective member of a goal-oriented team

  • Adept and creative problem-solving skills

  • Rigorous data analysis skills, including solid statistics and bioinformatics is a plus

  • Excellent organizational skills and outstanding attention to detail

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Education
  • B.Sc or an M.Sc in bioinformatics, computer science, computational biology, mathematics/statistics, or physics.
